Abstract
492,957. Gun turrets. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and FRISE, L. G. Feb. 5, 1936, No. 3537. [Class 92 (i)] An aircraft gun turret 13 is rotated with respect to the fuselage 10 by a double-acting hydraulic jack 28 carried by the rotary part of the turret and having a ram 30 geared to a gear wheel 24 secured coaxially with the axis of rotation of the turret, the arrangement being such that a constant torque is applied in all rotational positions of the turret. The invention is shown applied to a turret in which the gun is supported by a pillar 17 the lower end of which has a roller 26 engaging the floor of the turret. The cylinder of the hydraulic jack is hinged to an arm 27 extending from a drive member 16 attached to the pillar, and the ram carries a rack pressed into engagement with a fixed pinion 24 by a spring urged roller 31 on the drive member 16. The pinion may be mounted to move with the turret, the cylinder being mounted fast with the fuselage.
