Abstract

1321630 Rolling threads J B PLEVYAK 9 Nov 1970 53230/70 Heading B3M A knurling tool assembly, for knurling or threading the surface of a cylindrical work-piece, is arranged to be held in the turret of a lathe and comprises a body 28 carrying a pair of rolls 41 in pivoted arms 35 and 36. The body is provided with a rearwardly extending support for mounting the assembly in a lathe and with a rack bar 21 which can be operated by a movable part 17 of the lathe. The bar serves to move the rolls into contact with a work-piece and in mesh with a pinion 49 coupled to the lower arm. When the bar is moved inwardly against spring pressure, the pinion 49 and hence the arm 36 rotate, this rotation being transmitted by further pinions to the arm 35 such that the rolls move into contact with a work-piece. In an alternative form, Fig. 5, the body is formed in two sections 61 and 62 enclosing the pinions. Each arm 78 and 79 is coupled at its pivot with a respective pinion 106 and 115, Fig. 8. The pinions mesh with a central pinion 83 which is coupled through an intermediate gear with a rack bar 96, operated as before. A similar rack bar 136 on the tool serves as a stop for limiting inward movement of the arms towards a work-piece, thereby controlling the depth of knurling or threading on the work-piece. The bar 136 can alternatively be adjusted for manual operation of the tool assembly.
