Abstract

560,119. Rotary boring-heads. BOOTH, C. M., and BROWN & BROS. Ltd., G. Sept. 16, 1942, No. 13087. [Class 83 (iii)] Rotary boring-heads of the type in which the tool-holder in the form of a slide is traversable transversely of the head during the rotation thereof have the motion transmitted by means such as racks and pinions. The head has a shank 1, body 3 and head 2 which are either integral or rigidly connected. A sleeve 6 surrounds the body 3 leaving an annular space 5 for the operating mechanism. The tool-slide 14 moves in transverse diametral ways and carries on its rear face rack teeth meshing with a long pinion 17 mounted in a bore in the head 2 and journalled in screwed plugs 19, 20 that close the bore. Bores 23, 24 parallel to the axis house rack rods 21, 22 carried by a sleeve 25 traversed through ball thrust bearings by a flanged sleeve 28 screwed into the sleeve 5 and connected by pins 29 to rotate with a cap 6 closing the end of the sleeve 4, which is mounted in ball bearings 8, 9, 10 and on a roller bearing 13. The cap is clamped to the sleeve at 38, and the flange of the cap and the sleeve 4 may have co-operating graduations to assist in making an adjustment, which may be done whilst the head is in action by grasping the sleeve 4 to bring it to rest and then releasing the clamp 38 and turning the cap 6. In a modification the rack rods 21, 22 are replaced by quick pitch screws engaging corresponding bores in pinions engaging racks connected directly to the tool-slide.
