Abstract
598,560. Milling-machines. VILLENEUVE, C. SCHAUBLIN-. April 6, 1945, No. 8601. Convention date, March 14; 1944. [Class 83 (iii)] A milling-machine has an axially adjustable head rotatable round the axis of axial adjustment and the head carries an offset cutter spindle angularly adjustable about an axis perpendicular to the head adjustment axis and so mounted that it can be withdrawn by axial displacement of the head into the bore in which the latter is mounted. A hollow cylindrical head 4 is axially adjusted in a split bore 2 of a frame 1 by a hand wheel 41, Fig. 3, by means of gearing 39, 42, 44, Fig. 2, driving a screwed shaft 45 m engagement with a screwed lug 46 on a ring 47 rotatably engaging the head. The head is angularly adjusted by a hand wheel 40 by means of gearing 36, 34, Fig. 1, and a pinion 32 slidably mounted on a splined shaft 33 and engaging a toothed ring 30 on the head. A graduated scale 50, Fig. 9, indicates the angular position and the head is locked in the axially and angularly adjusted positions by a handle 3, Fig. 8. A body 18 for a cutter spindle 17 is angularly adjustable on a face 20 of the head and is locked by bolts 22, Fig. 8, whose heads slide in grooves 21 concentric with the axis of adjustment. A graduated scale (not shown) indicates the adjustment of the body. The drive for the cutter spindle is taken from a pulley 7 on a mainshaft 6 mounted coaxially in the head, through a pinion 9 slidable on a splined extension 8 of the mainshaft and engaging a pinion 10 fixed to a shaft 11 journalled in the head and through bevel gearing 12, 13, 15, 16, the axis of a shaft 14 for the gears 13, 15 being coincident with the axis of angular adjustment of the body. Framings and supports.-In the more fully extended positions of the head, it may be supported by an outboard bearing 27 rotatably carried by a pin 26 on slotted supports 25 and having two bores to receive two supporting arms 28. These arms slide in passages in the head and are locked by handles 29.
