1,191,453. Spectroscopic cells. BECKMAN - R.I.I.C. Ltd. June 30, 1967 [March 30, 1966], No. 14053/66. Heading G2J. A variable path length spectroscopic cell for liquid samples comprises a first part 1 having a window 5, a second part 2 screw-threaded with, and freely rotatable relative to, part 1, and a third part 3 having a window 10 and being carried by part 2 by means allowing relative rotation, but not relative axial movement, therebetween; relative rotation between parts 1 and 3 is prevented (e. g. by a pin 32), so that relative rotation between parts 1 and 2 varies the path length between the windows without causing the latter to rotate relative to one another. Part 1 may have a port 14 for introducing liquid between the windows and may be screw-threaded on to a tubular projection 18 of a cylinder 17 of part 2. Part 2 also has a sleeve 19 bearing screws 20 which deform projection 18 to remove backlash between parts 1 and 2, and an outer sleeve 21 which is heldagainst cylinder 17 by screws 22 and forms with part 1 a scale and marker for indicating the path distance. Part 3 has a flange 29 which is secured by screws 30 to a ring 23 rotatably mounted on a cylinder 17 by ball races 25, 26. Windows 5, 10 are sealed by deformable washers 7, 8, 12 and 13 and may be rendered parallel by adjusting screws 31.
