Abstract

518,020. Aircraft landing gear. STONE & CO., Ltd., J., and HATCHER, E. C. Aug. 6, 1938, No. 23274. [Class 4] A retractable undercarriage or landing wheel is raised and lowered by rack and pinion mechanism so arranged that when the pinion reaches the position in which the undercarriage is fully projected it rolls off the rack and effects a positive engagement between parts which transmit shock on landing to means supported on the aircraft and not to the operating gear. Fig. 1 shows a pivoted arm b which is raised .and lowered by a link e connected to a slotted member g having a rack h engaged by a pinion k supported by brackets m and driven from a motor M through reduction gearing. Rollers r are mounted on each side of the pinion to run on recessed tracks s, s<1>, a bay t being formed at the end of the slot into which the rollers fit when the arm b is extended so that landing shocks are transmitted directly to the spindle of the rollers and pinion. A similar bay t' may be formed at the other end of the slotted member to engage the rollers r when the undercarriage is retracted. Alternatively the slotted member g may be fixed and the pinion and driving-gear be mounted on the end of the link e. In a further modification the wheel-carrying member is pivoted at an intermediate point and its upper end is pivoted to a slotted link with rack engaged by a pinion and rollers on a fixed, part of the craft.
