569,160. Gyroscopic apparatus. HALLSTROM, H. H., and EHLIN, K. A. July 2, 1943, No. 10774. Convention date, Feb. 18, 1943. [Class 97 (iii)] A locking and adjusting device for a gyroscopic course indicator comprises a rotatable and axially displaceable operating knob or member permanently 'coupled with a' gear transmission to rotate a horizontal disc capable also of vertical displacement by a fork actuated by axial movement of the operating knob so as to bring the disc into engagement with the vertical gimbal. housing preparatory to its rotary adjustment for setting purposes. As shown, the sleeve 9 of the operating knob 8 is slidable, without rotation, upon a spindle 10 carrying a bevel gear 12 permanently meshing with a bevel gear 13. Pins 15 secured to the bevel gear 13 cause a disc 14 to rotate therewith whilst permitting axial movement of the disc. By pushing-in the knob 8, the end of the sleeve 9 rocks a fork 19 so as to raise the disc 14 until recesses 16 therein engage pins 17 projecting from the outer gimbal housing 18. At the same time, the disc 14 pushes up a pin 27 to engage a curved plate 29 on the rotor housing 1 and restore (if displaced) the rotor axis to horizontal position. By rotating the knob 8, the outer gimbal housing together with its compass rose 3 may be rotated to its required setting. If the outer housing is to be locked for transport, the disc 14 is left in engagement therewith. Dust-proof enclosure of the adjusting mechanism is maintained by a packing 35.
