Abstract

676,462. Containers for radio-active material. SOLUS-SCHALL, Ltd., and HOWKINS, S. W. Feb. 19, 1951 [Jan. 17, 1950], No. 1237/50. Class 98 (i). The container comprises a protective body containing a turntable which carries a radioactive source container and can be moved alternatively into a position exposing the source through a window in the protective body or into a position displaced by 180 degrees therefrom. The container may have a handle which is attached to the body for lifting it only when the turntable is in its safety position. As shown, the body 1, made of tungsten alloy, is adjustably supported on a foot 27, and is formed with a recess containing a turntable 5 having a spindle 6 projecting through the wall of the body 1. The turntable, also made of tungsten alloy, has a recess 16 disposed along its diameter for a container 17 for a radio-active source, and has two depressions 20, 21 engaged by a spring- pressed ball 22, to hold it in two positions. In one position a window 18 of the turntable is in register with a window 19 in the body; in the other position the windows are on opposite sides of the turntable. A long handle 11 has an axial bore containing a spring 13 and fitting over an extension 12 of shaft 6. A disc 7 with a radial slot is mounted on shaft 12 and fits within a ring 8 mounted on the body 1. The handle 11 has a lug 14 which enters the slot in disc 7 and turns it, thereby turning the turntable into one position or the other. When the turntable is in the safety position (with windows 18; 19 opposed) the lug 14, when the handle is pressed down, passes under a lug 10 mounted on ring 8 and having an inverted U- section, and when the handle 11 is released, lug 14 is pressed by spring 13 against lug 10. This engagement enables the body to be raised by means of the handle 11, but if the turntable is not in safety position and an attempt is made to raise the body, the handle merely comes away from the body. A pointer 24 on the handle 11 indicates whether the turntable is in safety position or not.
