Abstract
472,186. Magnetic compasses. PINCKNEY, V. April 28, 1936, No. 12041. [Class 97 (ii)] Relates to improvements in grid steering compasses. The bowl A carries two rotatable rings B and C. The ring B carries an index D which may be offset relatively 'to the fore- and-aft line G by an amount corresponding to the local variation, a scale E being provided on the ring B to co-operate with an index F on the bowl A. The ring C carries the grid wires K and a protractor scale H to co-operate with the index D. When set to the .desired course, the ring C is clamped to the ring B by a screw L so that when the ring B is moved to adjust the variation setting the ring C is simultaneously given a corresponding adjustment. An additional protractor scale I, in which each graduation is displaced by an amount equal and opposite to the deviation on the corresponding course may be provided. The positions of the index D and protractor scales H, I, may be interchanged. In a modification the grid wires K are placed inside the glass of the compass bowl, and the latter carries the protractor scales H, I, and is rotatable in the ring B which in turn is rotatable in a further ring carrying the gimbal pivots.
