Abstract

554,244. Magnetic compasses. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Dec. 24, 1941, No. 16656. Convention date, Jan. 23. [Class 97 (ii)] Relates to a direction indicating device for a craft whereon a compass is mounted and is subject to errors due to the effect of the vertical component of the earth's field upon soft iron masses aboard the craft and consists in mounting parallel Flinders bars for independent revolution about the pivot axis of the compass. The device is capable of adjustment to give a compensating effect equivalent to a single Flinders bar located on an axis other than the fore and aft axis of the craft without incurring practical difficulties such as may occur in the use of a single Flinders bar As shown, a pair of Flinders bars 10, 11 secured to gear rings 17, 18 may be independently adjusted around the vertical axis of the compass card 13 by means of knobs 23, 24. The bars are provided with pointers 29, 30 registering with a scale of degrees 31. Assuming that all compensation for quadrantal deviation, and semicircular deviation resulting from the sub-permanent magnetism of the ship has been effected at the equator and the ship brought to some North magnetic latitude, the bearing of maximum deviation is ascertained and the ship is headed along this course. The Flinders bars 10, 11 are then adjusted until the compass error is compensated.
