Abstract
287,536. Morel, A. M. C., and Soc. des Etablissements Krauss. March 23, 1927, [Convention date]. Mariners' compasses. - Comprises means for correcting mariners' &c. compasses for semicircular and quadrantal errors. The compass shown is of the liquid type comprising a card 3 supported by an inverted pivot 2 in a liquidcontaining chamber 7. The correctors for semicircular error comprise two barrels 26 rotatably mounted in cylinders 27 having their axes at right-angles to each other, the axis of one of the cylinders being parallel to the longitudinal axis of the ship &c. Each barrel carries two similar, but oppositely disposed, magnets or magnet systems 29, 29<1>. Each barrel can be rotated by a head 31 and is held in its adjusted position by a ring 34 slidably mounted in the cylinder 27, and caused to bear on the barrel by screwing on the cover 35. The corrector for quadrantal error comprises two parallel soft iron strips 37, 37<1> mounted below the compass magnets and disposed symmetrically with respect to the axis of the pivot 2.
