Abstract

596,543. Calculating apparatus. DOMASZEWSKI, J. July 30, 1945, No. 19443. [Class 106 (i)] [Also in Group XX] A navigating instrument for use on aircraft comprises indicating dividers provided with two logarithmic scales R, N, one representing units of distance or speed and the other intervals of time. A pointer F is adapted to be moved angularly with respect to the distance or speed scale N proportionally to the logarithm of the distance between the points of the dividers when separated to obtain the linear distance between two places on a map. Thus, when two of the quantities distance, time and speed are known and set up on the instrument, the third is indicated. The pointer F, which may be duplicated to indicate miles and nautical miles, or triplicated to indicate kilometres also, is carried by a pinion G in mesh with a sector H which is moved about its spindle J, integral with one leg B of the dividers, by the action of a cam L, moving with the other leg A of the dividers, on a spring-urged follower arm K integral with the sector H. The scale N is adjustable relative to the body C to accommodate for various map scales, being clamped in position by a nut P. Scale R, which has a lubber line T and is transparent where it extends over the scale N, is clamped in position by a nut S.
