Abstract

Logarithmic calculators for solving spherical triangles by the tangentcosine formulae, for example for determining the altitude and azimuth of an observed heavenly body when the latitude, hour angle, and declination are known, comprise two coaxial cylinders 1, 2 preferably of opaque material graduated on helical lines capable of movement relative to one another and to a cursor 3 provided with pointers 4, 5 of different lengths which co-operate with the two cylinders. The inner cylinder is graduated with a scale representing logarithmic tangents and the outer cylinder with a scale representing logarithmic cosines, separate scales being provided to cover the very small angles and angles near 90‹ respectively, but used only in conjunction with one another. To deal with angles greater than 90‹, the scales may be numbered backwards. The cursor 3 can be readily brought to zero by moving the parts until a projection 7 thereon engages a stop 6 on the outer cylinder 2. In a modification, the cylinders are coaxial, but are of the same diameter, and the pointers are formed by a tube slidable along a shaft parallel to the axis of the cylinders, one pointer being relatively movable on the tube.
