Abstract
665,159. Navigational instruments. KELVIN & HUGHES, Ltd. April 4. 1950 [April 4, 1949], No. 9126/49. Class 97 (iii). A navigational device whereby a navigator can quickly locate his position after taking sextant readings from two or more heavenly bodies comprises a transparent film or strip provided with a straight centre-line 10 and on which is provided projections of curves 11 of approximately circular shape of equal altitudes on stereographic projections or other projections of like qualities to the scale of the map or chart being employed for navigation, the centres of the curves 11 being on the line 10. The film or strip is adapted for adjustment around an axis 13 perpendicular to the chart and for permitting the navigator to trace the appropriate curve on the chart whilst the film or strip is in position to indicate the curve on the chart. As shown, the curves 11 are in the form of slots so that a pencil can trace them. Alternatively the curves may be in the form of lines, means being provided to support the film at some distance above the map and for moving the film around the said perpendicular axis, and light means being provided for projecting the lines on to the map. The centre line 10 is marked with a scale to indicate nautical miles and a protractor 12 is marked on the film, and has a central protractor hole at 13. The edges of the film are marked off in degrees.
