The sector is optionally provided with a centre line 1, degree of arc scale, distance markings, several arcuate slots with further (optional) degree of arc markings and turning point photographic zone markings and slot. <IMAGE>
Description
MAP MARKER.
This invention relates to a map/chart marker and navigational aid which can be used in gliding or power flying.
In marking maps/charts, notably aeronautical charts, it is customary and most useful to mark distances from or to a position, destination or turn point, either by regularly spaced marks on a trackline from or to a position, turn point or destination, or by arcs/circles drawn with the centre on the position, destination or turn point, in order to estimate easily the distance to go or gone. In addition, it is essential to know how far off track in degrees of arc is the present position. More specificially, in gliding it is necessary to mark turn points and photographic zones associated with turn points accurately. This invention combines and enables all these tasks to be performed simply and easily. Furthermore, in- flight analysis is possible through the invention's portability.
According to the invention there is provided a map/chart and navigational aid comprising a transparent sector consisting of two radii and an arc edge, the two radii meeting at a point or apex, the sector having at least one arcuate slot arc-centred on the point or apex.
Preferably the map/chart marker has a centre line marked from the apex to the arc edge, the centre line optionally having regularly spaced distance markings marked thereon, the distance markings starting at the apex.
The map/chart marker may also have units of arc marked on the arc edge, which units radiate outwards from the centre line. In addition, distance scales may be marked on the radii, the scales starting at the apex. Preferably the sector has several arcuate slots positioned at intervals from and arc-centred on the apex. Units of arc may be marked below each arcuate slot. The slot nearest the apex may mark a turn point zone in an appropriate scale.
The map/chart marker is preferably made in PVC for strength and durability, but other clear plastics may be used.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of the invention
in which the sector is a quadrant.
Figure 2 is a plan view of a second embodiment of the
invention in which the angle at the apex of the
sector is less than 90".
The map/chart marker 9 shown in Figure 1 is a quadrant which has a centre line 1 marked with distance markings out from the point or apex 8, an arc edge 2 marked in degrees of arc radiating out from the centre line 1 and straight edges 3 and 4 marked in suitable scale distances appropriate to the map/chart in use. Six arcuate slots 5 are cut out of the quadrant 9; the slots mark suitable scale distances from the apex 8 and are arc-centred on the apex 8 with the inner edge marking the distance. Degree of arc markings are optionally provided below the slots, the nearest slot to the apex 8 marking a turn point zone in an appropriate scale. Two marker holes 6 are drilled in the centre line 1.
In Figure 1 the invention is shown with scales appropriate to 1:500 000 and 1:250 000, although other scales could be used as required.
The invention is, in most cases, used with point 8 on the position, destination or turn point.
Distances may be marked or measured using the slots 5 and arc edge 2, or more accurately using the scales on the straight edges 3 and 4.
Degrees of track may be measured using the degree of arc scales on the slots 5 and arc edge 2, and the centre line 1. Distances and degrees of arc may be measured simultaneously.
A turning point photographic zone is the area 45" either side of the bisector of track-in and track-out and on the opposite side to track-in and track-out. Thus turning point photographic zones are marked along a line midway between track-in and track-out, and on the opposite side to track-in and track-out, using the centre line 1 and appropriate slot or zone markings 7. Holes 6 help to mark the bisector.
The map/chart marker of the invention may be a quadrant, as shown in Figure 1. Alternatively, the angle at the apex 8 can be less than 90", or more than 90 depending on the type and speed of aircraft being flown. Thus, for example, Figure 2 shows an alternative embodiment of the map/chart marker 9 in which the angle at the apex 8 is 60".
Such a map/chart marker can be used in faster aircraft, such as military jets, or in situations where a pilot wishes to travel longer distances, and therefore needs to measure longer distances. The map/chart marker 9 in Figure has seven arcuate slots 5.
