Abstract

588,983. Plotting instruments. GOLD, T., and WRIGHT, C. S. March 12, 1945, No. 6209. [Class 97 (iii)] An instrument for deriving from a contour map the areas of terrain visible from any given observation point comprises two substantially straight members 1, 3 hinged at 5 and a bar 7, fitted with a scale-14 and slidably coupled with both members, the arrangement being such that movement of the bar along the members does not vary their angular relationship, but changes the scale reading. Control means, e.g. a rack and pinion, are provided for increasing the angle between the members by moving the bar 7 at right angles to the member 1. The angle between the members is prevented from decreasing by a non-return device 11. The zero mark 15 on the scale may be moved to allow for the height of the observation point above mean sea level and the member 3 may be slightly curved to allow for the earth's curvature:
