Abstract

177,549. Wimperis, H. E. March 13, 1918. Angle-measuring instruments. - Relates to bomb-dropping sights and navigation instruments for aircraft, of the type comprising members adjustable in accordance with the vector quantities of air-speed, wind-speed, and ground-speed, and consists in the combination therewith of a compass and other adjustable members to facilitate the determination of wind-speed and ground speed vector quantities, and for course-steering. The air-speed bar 2 is adjustable in the fore-andaft line of the aircraft, by a hand-wheel 4, relatively to the fixed member 1 in accordance with the known speed in air of the aircraft. The windspeed bar 5 is pivoted to a block 3 on the bar 2 and carries a slider 6 adjustable by a hand-wheel 7 along the graduated wind-speed bar. A drift or ground-speed bar 9 is pivoted by a sleeve 10 to a vertical bar 11 and is slidable through a pillar 8 on the air-speed slider 6. A compass 16 is mounted on the fixed member 1 and has a dial plate 14 on which is marked a wind arrow 15, the dial plate being geared to the wind-speed bar 5 so that the arrow 15 is maintained parallel to that bar. A graduated bearing-ring 13 is mounted above the dial plate, and a clamping device 17 is provided whereby the ring and plate may be clamped or freed for joint or independent movements. A pointer 18 is carried by the member 1 and a second pointer 19 is displaced by angular movements of the bar 9. The vertical bar 11 carries sight members 23 which are adjustable on the bar for the altitude of the machine. Bombdropping foresights 24 are provided on the stem 8. The ground-speed may be determined by means of fixed or adjustable beads 21, 22 on wires 20 carried bv the bar 9. An object on the ground is sighted through the backsight 23 and its time of passage between the beads 21. 22 is a measure of the ground speed. Various ways in which the instrument can be used for course-steering and for wind estimation are described.
