Abstract

550,499. Magnetic compasses. JONSSON, A. April 22, 1942, No. 5416. [Class 97 (ii)] In a magnetic compass wherein the compass box 3 is rotatably mounted in a circular base 1 provided with an extension or rule 2 indicating the marching direction, the compass-box is provided with differently coloured plates or fields forming by their edges a number of parallel lines 9, 10, 11 the terminal points of which are situated at the periphery of the compass base. The plates or fields are provided on the top of the compass-box, or when the compass-box is wholly transparent the plates or fields are provided on the bottom. When the bearing between two places A and B on a map 18 is required the rule 2 is placed along the line A, B, and the compassbox 3 is rotated in the base and adjusted until a bearing line, e.g. the line 10 coincides with a meridian 19. When the north end of the needle 5 points towards the north-south line 8, the extension 2 indicates the marching direction.
