Abstract
624,234. Magnetic compasses. RAYNES, J. S., HARVEY, G. N., and HITCHINS, H. L. June 18, 1947, No. 16055. [Class 97 (ii)] A heeling error corrector for a magnetic compass comprises a permanent magnet mounting with means for adjusting the inclination of the magnetic axis relatively to the axis of a Flinders bar. The binnacle 1, Fig. 1, for the compass 2, provided with corrector spheres 3, Flinders bar 4, and permanent correcting magnets 5 is provided with a boxmounting 7 for the permanent bar magnets 6 which are inclined relatively to the Flinders bar for correcting heeling error. As shown in Fig. 3, one part of the mounting 7 projects into the binnacle 1 and the lower part is located outside the binnacle. The magnets 6 rest against a back plate 11, provided with magnet-separating pins 11a and 11b and against the upper face of a cam 8 and a curved locating plate 10, and are held in position by a spring-urged bar 12. The cam 8 is fast on a spindle 8a and has at its mid-length a ball-ended lever 8b which projects into a socket at the end of a cylindrical adjusting nut 14 longitudinally displaceable by a screw 15. In use a reading is taken with the Flinders bar in the easterly direction and without any of the magnets 6 in the mounting 7: The magnets are then inserted and the cam 8 is turned by means of the screw 15 until the same compass reading is obtained. The cam position indicator 9 is then set to show against its index the length of the Flinders bar in use and locked to the cam spindle by means of the set-screw provided. The adjustment can then be altered when the length of the Flinders bar is changed by turning the cam 8 until the dial 9 shows the new length of bar against its index. A hinged cover 7a, 7b, is provided which may be locked to prevent alteration of the adjustment of screw 15. An adjustable magnet of known kind may be provided instead of the magnets 6 and the mounting 7 may be secured to the ring on which the Flinders bar is mounted, so as to slew therewith.
