Abstract

862,290. Optical alignment apparatus, ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 29, 1958 [May 31, 1957], No. 17409/57. Class 97(1) In order to determine the location of a body relative to a straight line, a line image of a source is formed by a diffraction grating, and this line image and a reference mark attached to the body are viewed through means attached to the body. As shown in Fig. 4, the body T to be located includes an eye-piece E and cross-hairs W which are mounted on a rod D, axially displaceable under the control of a vernier screw M. In front of the body are disposed a light source S and a diffraction grating G, whereby a line image of the source is formed along a line through the centre of the grating. The body T can be placed so that the cross-hairs W appear to lie on this line image, or the body T can be set in a known position and the rod D adjusted until the crosshairs coincide with the line image. A reflecting grating may alternatively be used, in which case the light source is carried by the rod D. As a light source a second diffraction grating may be employed, the spacing of which is the same as that of the grating G, and arranged so that the central point is opaque. The apparatus may be used for aligning bearing housings, as of a turbine.
