Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the read-in accuracy, by providing two calibration reference mark within the sight of the solidstate image sensor and compensating the expansion or shrinking of document and magnification of optical system.
CONSTITUTION: On the read-in plane of the document 3 fed to the carrying path 2 of the optical character reader 1, the light from the light source 4 is radiated and the information from the document 3 is read in two read-in elements 5. Three calbration reference marks 6 are placed along the carrying direction of the document 3 on the carrying path 2 so that the marks 6 can be within the sight of the two read-in elements and the size of the sight can be specified. Further, based on the marks 6, after the measurement of the actual sight of the read-in elements 5, the signal processing circuit compares the actual sight with the reference sight set from the marks 6 to detect the magnification of the optical system corresponding to each of read-in element 5. Further, the signal processing circuit operates the magnification of the document 3 and the expansion and shrinking rate for the magnification compensation of the coordinate data and the expansion and shrinking compensation, allowing to increase the read-in accuracy.
