Abstract

PURPOSE: To miniaturize the unit, to raduce its cost and to improve measurement precision by catching a ball in the act of moving by linear image sensors arranged on the top and side of a base board and then by detecting the speed of the ball by fixed arithmetic.
CONSTITUTION: On the top and side of base board 3, linear image sensors 1 and 2 are arranged. In front of sensors 1 and 2, lenses 7 and 8 and illumination light sources L1 and L2 are provided. By way of waveform shaping circuit 12, the output of sensor 2 is led to time measuring circuit 18 to find time T when formed image 32 of a ball passes through width (a) of photosense part 31. The output is input to speed arithmetic circuit 19 and contraction factor (m) of the formed image of the ball is found by a constant stored together with data (x) representing a ball position from sensor 1. Then, the above-mentioned time T and width (a) are used to calculate ball speed V=ma/T. Consequently, the speed can be detected with accuracy since the x-axial change of the ball is corrected.
