Abstract

A collimating lens 5 is placed in front of the index scale 4 and a collimating lens 6 is on the back of the main scale with axis X-X parpendicular to the scale as optic axis. Four fine light sources y1Wy4 are arranged close to the plane where the focal point of the lens 6 is positioned and photodetectors Y1WY4 are arranged on the forcal surface of the lens 6. The light of the light sources y1 and y4 is condenced on the photodetectors Y1WY4 through scales 3 and 4. The light sources y1, y2, y3 and y4 are so positioned that a strip signal of the moire shifts in sequence by 90° in the direction in which the scales moves and the use of a signal obtained from the photodetectors Y1WY4 enables indication of displacement without errors.
