Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate a phase error of a segment pattern by providing a moving means for moving the optical axes of light source devices, and an interval adjusting means for adjusting intervals between the light sources of the light source devices and condensers. CONSTITUTION:A movable grating 1 having grating pitch P moves as a moving body moves. A fixed grating 2 has the same grating pitch P with the movable grating 1, and consists of at least four segments 21-24 arrayed so that their relative positions have a period nearly 1/8 as great as the grating pitch P in the movement direction of the movable grating 1. Two light source devices 3 and 3' are provided with means for adjusting intervals between their light sources 4 and 4', and condenser lenses 5 and 5', thereby eliminating phase errors included in patterns between the left and right segments 21 and 22, and between 23 and 24. Further a means for moving the optical axis of the light source 3' in parallel to the movement direction of the movable grating 1 is provided to eliminate a phase error between two grating patterns consisting of those segments 21, 22 and 23, 24.
