Abstract

895,564. Optical aligning apparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 25, 1960 [Jan. 29, 1959], No. 3262/59. Class 97(1). Optical apparatus for indicating the displacements of a body from a vertical straight line comprises an optically transparent flat plate extending substantially horizontally, a circular diffraction grating formed on one surface of said plate, a horizontal reflecting surface located on one side of said plate, a holder adapted to be attached to said body and to contain a point source of light which is located on the opposite side of said plate so as to project a beam of light in a direction which is substantially normal to said reflecting surface, in such a manner as to produce a line image of said source extending on the opposite side of said plate from the centre point of said diffraction grating and displaced from the vertical reference line through said centre point symmetrically with the line joining the point source to said centre point, together with means for indicating the position of said line image so as to indicate displacements of said holder and said body from said vertical reference line. As shown, the apparatus comprises a holder A attached to a body B, the displacement of which from a vertical straight line is to be measured. The holder A contains a point source of light S and cross wires W both mounted on a rod T operable by a micrometer screw M. The light from the source S falls on diffraction grating G close below which is a reflecting surface formed by a pool of mercury R, so that a line image of the source extends from the centre point C of the grating to a position I disposed symmetrically on the opposite side of a vertical reference line defined by the line through the centre of the grating C. In use the rod T is moved until the cross wires W appear to coincide with the line image at I when viewed through a lens L. By viewing the image I continuously, displacements of the cross wires W from this image will indicate displacement of the box A and body B from the vertical reference line, and such deviations can be measured by the micrometer M. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 862,290.
