Abstract

650,826. Optical apparatus. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Oct. 31, 1947, No. 29103. [Classes 97 (i) and 98 (i)] Optical apparatus for recording an image, the position of which relative to the optical axis of a camera indicates the angular relationship between a reference axis and the optical axis of the camera comprises a mounting for a camera 11, said mounting also carrying a free gyroscope 12 defining the reference axis, e.g. the vertical, a transparent plane mirror 15 inclined at 45 degrees to the camera axis, a roof prism 14 similarly inclined to the camera axis so as to form with the plane mirror 15 three plane reflecting surfaces which are mutually perpendicular, and a projector 16. Light from this projector passes through the transparent mirror 15 and is reflected at 14 on to a convex mirror 17, which is carried by the inner gimbal of the gyroscope 12 so that its principal focus lies at the point of intersection of the gimbal axes. The projector 16 is adjusted so that the light beam converges on the principal focus of mirror 17 so that a parallel light beam is reflected by this mirror and is directed at 14 and 15 into the camera, whereby an image of a graticule in the projector is formed on the film or plate in the camera by the lens thereof. When the camera axis is vertical, the graticule image 19 will be formed on the camera axis. If the camera, however, is not disposed with its axis vertical, the graticule image will be formed, for example, at 18, the distance of this point from the camera axis giving an indication of the inclination of the camera axis to the vortical.
