Abstract
1,126,928. Micrometers. G. K. N. SHARDLOW METROLOGY Ltd. Oct. 17, 1966 [Oct. 29, 1965], No. 45967/65. Heading G1M. A measuring instrument has a screw threaded measuring element 16, a "thimble element 24" rotatable with the measuring element 16 and having a single set of graduations, and a cylindrical non- rotatable element, the latter having either two graduated non-parallel reference lines so that with reference to one of said lines the instrument can be used for measuring in inches and with reference to the other of said lines the instrument can be used for measuring in millimetres, or having a single reference line graduated on one side in inches and on the other in millimetres so that with reference to one set of graduations there is obtained a direct accurate reading which must be modified by a correction factor to obtain an accurate reading. The reference lines may diverge helically as shown Fig. 2, or alternatively one line may diverge helically from a straight reference line marked parallel to the axis of the barrel 12. In a further modification, the reference scales are provided on either side of a straight line running parallel to the axis of the barrel 12 alternatively straight line scales may be placed equi-angular with respect to the axis of the barrel. A large number of examples of thimble markings and reference scales are given. The scale lines may be marked in differing colours, e. g. red and black.
