Abstract

1,175,606. Magnetic compasses. MOBELL MARINE DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. Aug.27, 1968 [June 12, 1967], No.27062/67. Heading G1N. The angular relationship between a magnetic compass and its housing is sensed by Hall plate elements mounted on the housing and fed to a repeater indicator. As shown Fig. 1 a diametrically magnetised ring magnet 1 attached to a compass card 2 is suspended in a bearing 4 in a liquid filled bowl 16. A central stem 6 attached to the bowl carries a Hall plate element 5. Relative movement between the magnet and the housing, e. g. by a change of heading of a ship on which it is mounted, produces a change in signal voltage from the Hall plate element 5, which is fed to a repeater. The assembly has facilities for initially adjusting the housing to produce zero output signal at a desired craft heading. Modifications include replacing the ring magnet by two parallel bar magnets Fig. 5 (not shown) with like poles adjacent, and using two Hall plate elements whose planes are perpendicular, or three element at 120 degrees to each other.
