Abstract
445,312. Magnetic compasses. TILLANDER, G., 3, Rosvõgen, Stocksund, and EKEBERG, H. R., 14, Valhallavõgen, Stockholm, both in Sweden. Dec. 11, 1934, No. 35597. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1933. [Class 97 (ii)] The liquid-filled casing of a magnetic compass is made wholly of resilient material. In the form shown the interior of the transparent celluloid casing 1 has, for the purpose of reducing rotation of the contained liquid, stationary ribs 2, which also form a central recess for receiving the hub of the needle 3. The latter comprises two aligned magnets held together by the hub which carries a stone normally resting on a pivot pin 7 secured in a conical protuberance 6 attached to the bottom of the casing 1. The protuberance 6 is surrounded by a ring 4, with a conical aperture so that when the compass is inclined the ring 4 slides along the protuberance 6 against the action of a weak spring 5 and lifts the needle 3 from the pin 7. An outer casing 11 with windows 12 and a recess 20 in the bottom surrounds the casing 1 and is pivotally secured to a transparent ruler 8 by a screw 9. The casing 11 has diametrical mark 15, which may be set to align with a longitudinal line 13 on the ruler 8, a scale 14 for setting the declination, and two lines 16 on either side of and parallel to the line 15. The side of the casing 11 facing the ruler 8 may be graduated in degrees.
