Abstract
478,557. Polarizing-apparatus. ZEISS IKON AKT.-GES. Aug. 6, 1937, Nos. 21726, 21727, and 21728. Convention dates, Aug. 6, 1936, Aug. 7, 1936, and Feb. 5, 1937. [Class 97 (i)] A polarizing-filter, particularly intended for testing the setting of polarizing-screens fitted to motor-vehicle headlamps, has means for indicating when, or ensuring that, the plane of polarization of the filter makes a predetermined angle with a fixed plane of reference when the optical axis of the filter is set in or parallel to the said plane. In Figs. 1 and 2 the filter 1 is mounted between cover glasses 2, 3 so shaped as to form between them an arcuate channel 4 in which is disposed a metal ball &c. 5, the position of which can be read on a scale 6 on one of the cover glasses. The plane of polarization of the filter is in the desired direction when the ball is opposite the zero of the scale. In Fig. 6, the filter 10 is freely suspended in a liquid 13 contained between glass discs 11, 12 and is weighted by a sinker 15 so that it always takes up a position in which the diameter of the filter passing through the sinker is vertical.
