Abstract

244,593. Escallier, P. Dec. 18, 1924, [Convention date]. Mariners' and aeronautical compasses. - For facilitating the reading of a compass, particularly on an aeroplane, and enabling the pilot to follow a given course, the compass bowl 3 is rotatably mounted within a fixed bowl 1 and is provided, at the level of the card 6, with a rim 7. On the card 6 is drawn a part of a distinctive figure, such as an aeroplane 8. the remainder of which is drawn on the rim 7. The bowl 3 is also provided with a graduated rim 10 and the bowl 1 carries an index 2 which can be adjusted around an arc 20 to compensate for compass errors. The bowl 3 can be rotated by a worm 4 engaging a gear 5, the worm spindle 15 being provided with a ratchet 14 urged by a spring 16 against a detent 17 to look the gear after adjustment. To steer to a given course the bowl 3 is turned until the pointer 2 indicates the course on the scale 10, and the pilot then steers so that the figure 8 is always unbroken. To indicate the direction in which to steer when the desired course is not being followed, the part 23 of the card 6 and the corresponding part 22 of the rim 7 are coloured, and the part 22 is also marked with the letters G (left) and D (right). In a modification, spur gearing is provided for rotating the bowl 3.
