Abstract

Indicating particular readings.-In an instrument in which the rate of turn, or the turning movement, of an aircraft is indicated 'by the precession of a gyroscope, the precession spindle 12 carries a rotary dial 13 which is opaque except for a clear portion or a hole 15. Mounted behind the dial 13 is a stationary colour-filter 16 comprising a diamond-shaped clear portion or hole 17, a green portion 18 and a red portion 19. The holes 15, 17 may be provided with lines &c. 20, 21 which are coincident during straight flying. The parts 18, 19 of the filter may also be marked with lines 22 in continuation of two sides of the diamond to give a measure of the turning movement, for which purpose also the dial 13 is marked with graduations 14 read against a stationary index 23. The filter and the index may be movable for zero adjustment. Illumination is provided by a lamp 24. Instead of being formed as plane surfaces as shown the dial and filter may be of cylindrical shape, the markings &c. being on the curved surfaces of the cylinders.
