Abstract

131,687. Hughes, A. J., and Hughes & Son, H. Aug. 1, 1918. Magnetic compasses.-A compass for use in steering aircraft is provided with an adjustable lubber line adapted to be set to allow for drift on an out-and-home course. A circular frame D, rotatable on the bezel of the compass, carries pointers E, F at an angle of 180 degrees to one another. Two segmental frames H<11>, J<11>, adjustable on the frame D, are each provided with a fixed pointer N and a movable one L. The zero of the graduations on the fixed bezel is set on the fore-and-aft axis of the machine. In use, the frame D and its pointers are set for the magnetic ground course as shown in the figure, the frame H" (say) is next moved so that the pointer N contacts with pointer E, and the pointer L is adjusted according to the drift angle, which may be determined by the device described in Specification 131,688. The pointer L then serves as the lubber line for the outward journey. On the homeward journey the frame H" is swung round until the pointer L contacts with the pointer F, and the pointer N is then used as the lubber line.
