Abstract
142,261. Butler, W. R. April 3, 1919. Gyroscopic apparatus.-An instrument for use on aircraft &c. for demonstrating the relationship between the horizontal, the latitude, and a line parallel to the earth's axis, and for determining the horizontal when the other two are known, comprises a base-plate 1 carrying a pillar 2 which supports a fork 5 carrying gimbal rings 6, within which is mounted a gyroscope 9 with its axis 8 parallel to the earth's axis and its centre of gravity over the centre of the base-plate. Also attached to the base-plate is an arm 3 terminating in a graduated quadrant 4, the centre of which coincides with the centre of gravity of the gyroscope. The arm 3 can be set to any position round the rim of the base-plate, and a pointer C can be set to any position on the quadrant. If the arm 3 is adjusted until its median plane is in the plane of the axis 8, and if the pointer C is adjusted to the latitude, then, when the baseplate 1 is horizontal, the axis 8 is in line with the pointer C. The arm 3 may carry an index line P indicating against graduations on the baseplate, the course being made by the aircraft &c.
