Abstract

258,158. Braibant, N. Feb. 15, 1926. Mariners' compasses; horizons, artificial.-In a suspension for a mariner's compass, artificial horizon, &c. the compass box 24 is supported by a resilient block 25 within a gimbal-mounted liquid-tight casing 1 carrying a vane or paddle 3 immersed in liquid within a container 28. The casing 1 is supported within the ring 31 by adjustable screw pivots 33 and the ring is in turn supported within the binnacle 6 by similar pivots 32.. The container 28 is supported on an annular projection 37 on the binnacle, and is spaced from the binnacle walls by rubber pads 29 pressed against the container by screws 30. The container is constructed as shown to minimize the escape of liquid. To diminish the moment of inertia of the compass, the paddle may be made hollow and it may communicate with the interior of the casing 1 by means of a tube through which it can be loaded with shot &c. to adjust the centre of gravity. Alternatively, this adjustment may be effected by loading the casing 1. Specification 251,921 is referred to.
