Abstract

141,477. Gardiner, W. C. March 11, 1919. Gyroscopic apparatus.-A gyroscope 4, mounted in gimbals 2, 3 and having its axis maintained in the vertical direction by gravitational or pendulous action, is provided with means, responsive to acceleration forces, for varying the amount of pendulous control. The means employed comprise a solenoid 6 adapted, when energized, to displace a mass 5 vertically, the current to the solenoid being controlled by an accelerometer &c., which may be of the kind described in Specification 20231/09, [Class 97 (ii), Surveying &c. instruments], or may consist, as shown, of a bowl 8 having a conducting-ring 9 and containing mercury 7 adapted to cover the ring 9 when the acceleration reaches a predetermined value. Levels may be mounted on the apparatus.
