Abstract
551,079. Gyroscopic apparatus. PRITCHARD, H. C., and BARNES, J. W. March 22, 1941, No. 3910. [Class 97 (iii)] In a gyro-vertical for use on aircraft or other moving vehicles wherein a tree gyroscope is mounted in substantially neutral equilibrium and is provided with separate gravity-responsive devices for controlling the erection of the gyroscope in the plane of pitch and roll respectively the gravity-responsive devices are constructed so as to produce no precession in the plane of roll when the lateral component of the linear acceleration of the craft exceeds a predetermined value (for example, during a considerable turn) whereas the means for producing precession in the plane of pitch remain operative irrespective of the acceleration of the craft. As shown, the gyro casing I containing a vertical rotor is supported in a gimbal ring 2 by means of pivots 3, 4 and the gimbal ring is mounted on pivots 5 arranged in a fore and aft direction. The rotor is driven by air which escapes from the casing through two pairs of ports 6, 8 and 7, 9 co-operating with pendulous flaps 10, 12 and 11, 13 to produce the erecting torques. According to the present invention the fore and aft pendulous flaps 10, 12 are provided with extension pieces 17, 18 which fully cover the ports 6, 8 when a considerable lateral acceleration occurs thus eliminating all the roll erection action of the flaps under these conditions.
