Abstract

624,201. Gyroscopic apparatus. THOMAS, 1. L. June 11, 1947, No. 15418. [Class 97 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXV] In a gyromagnetic compass system wherein two heading references afforded by pendulously mounted magnetic means and by an azimuth gyroscope are compared to control means for adjusting the gyro heading to correspond with the magnetic, heading and having a movement transmitting system to one or more repeaters for indicating at one or more points the gyroscopic heading, means responsive to the rate at which such movement is transmitted, i.e. to the driving force transmitted, are employed to retard and/or prevent adjustment of the gyro heading consequent upon divergence of the gyro and magnetic headings when the rate or force exceeds a predetermined value. As shown, the voltage in the repeater transmission system T-R, which is proportional to the rate-of-turn of the craft, is applied to a relay 11 which operates when the voltage exceeds a predetermined value to open contacts 12 in the circuit from the means C, wherein the heading from the gyro G and the magnetic compass M are compared, to the precessing means P. In another embodiment, the transmission repeater system voltage operates means to produce a bias voltage which is applied to the amplifier in the precession circuit so that when the rateof-turn exceeds a predetermined value the bias is sufficient to retard and then interrupt the precession of the gyroscope. The control voltage, proportional to the rate-of-turn may be derived from an amplifier in the repeater transmission system.
