[Also in Groups XXXIII and XXXV] In an automatic control system for stabilizing ships, the error signals are derived from a velocity sensitive gyroscope only so that any reaction back on to the gyroscope due to limiting the movement of the stabilizer does not affect the system. The gyroscope 1, Fig. 1, is mounted with its spindle athwartships and is free to precess about a vertical axis. The angular velocity of rolling causes a precessional torque which is converted into a proportional movement by centralizing springs. The gyroscope is coupled by a synchronous movement transmitter 2 to a similar receiver 3 which operates a hydraulic amplifier 4, 5 controlling an unspecified corrector. Movement of the receiver 3 is limited by stops 9. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the movement transmitter supplies a rectifier which energizes an electromagnetic relay controlling the hydraulic amplifier 4, 5 (above).
