Abstract
683,354. Radio navigation. SPERRY CORPORATION. Jan. 19, 1951 [Jan. 21, 1950], No. 1501/51. Class 40 (vii). [Also in Group XXXV] In an automatic speed control system for an aircraft such as that described in Specification 655,172, [Group XXXV], wherein the throttle control is controlled in accordance with airspeed, a further speed control term is added from the elevator channel (e.g. from a glide path receiver) to counteract oscillations in air-speed due to changes in the inclination of the craft. As shown, and as described in Specification 655,172, [Group XXXV], air-speed-error signals from an E-type pick-off 19 associated with an air-speed-indicator 1, are fed through a phase-sense detector 49 and a network 69, 71, 73, giving the error plus its rate of charge to a balanced amplifier 75 controlling the throttle operating servomotor 85. The rate of throttle movement obtained from a tachometer generator 91 is fed through a network 93, 95, 97 (giving the rate of movement plus its integral) to the other input of the balanced amplifier 75. In accordance with the invention, the D.C. error signal from a glide path receiver 59 is modulated at 65 and added in series with the speed error signal or alternatively, Fig. 2 (not shown), a signal from the elevator channel of the automatic pilot, comprising glide path and pitch attitude error signals may be added to the speed error signal.
