Abstract

677,752. Automatic flight control systems. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. April 24, 1950 [May 26, 1949], No. 10072/50. Class 38 (iv). To maintain a craft at a predetermined altitude, the elevators are controlled in accordance with the speed and the engine power in accordance with the altitude so that if, e.g., the craft is below the required altitude the engine power is increased, tending to increase the speed of the craft; the speed control causes the craft to climb, reducing speed and correcting the altitude. As shown, the elevator is controlled by signals from an inductive pick-off 56 coupled to a pitot head 26; pick-off 30 coupled to the pitch-responsive element of a gyro horizon 24; speed-setting-pickoff 28 and follow-up pick-off 29 driven by the elevator servomotor 10. The combined input signal is applied to a conventional phase-sensitive amplifier 12 to control the twophase elevator servomotor 10. The altimeter element 48 fed from the static head of the pitot tube 26 is coupled to an inductive pick-off 50 which is connected in series with the follow-up pick-off 118 to a similar amplifier 104 energizing the throttle servomotor 110. Specification 662,831 is referred to.
