Abstract
707,932. Automatic steering control systems. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Jan. 15, 1952 [March 10, 1951], No. 1179/52. Class 38(4) In a system for automatically controlling a craft about one of its axes in response to rate of change of attitude of the craft about that axis, such response is varied as a function of altitude. As shown a gyroscope 6 responsive to change of altitude of a craft about one of its axes is associated with the rotor 3 of an inductive pick-off 1 the stator 5 of which applies, according to the sense of attitude deviation, an A.C. signal of one phase or the other to an amplifier triode valve 9. One or other of two triode valves 13, 15 is thus rendered conductive to saturate, through a winding 19 or 21, one or other of two transformers, the secondary windings 27, 29 of which are connected in opposition to supply a normally de-energized winding 31 of a two-phase servomotor 33. Servomotor 33 thereupon runs in the appropriate direction to correct attitude by adjustment of a control surface 39. An inductive device 40 operated by servomotor 33 produces a follow-up signal and an inductive device 45 associated with a gyro 48 responsive to rate of change of attitude produces a rate signal. These signals are applied to the input of valve 9 from stators 43 and 49 respectively. To increase the rate signal with increase of altitude so as to maintain constant the total damping of the craft, a device 57 responsive to barometric pressure is associated with an inductive device 51 controlling the voltage applied from an A.C. source S to the rotor 47 of inductive device 45. To increase the deviation signal with increase of altitude and decrease of speed so as to maintain constant the total static stability of the craft, a device 65 responsive to dynamic pressure is associated with an inductive device 64 controlling the voltage applied from an A.C. source S to the rotor 3 of inductive device 1. Rheostats 59 and 67 permit adjustment to obtain the desired response characteristics of the craft.
