[Also in Groups XXXIII and XXXV] In an automatic stabilizing system for a ship, in which the combined outputs of a vertical keeping gyroscope and a velocity sensitive gyroscope control stabilizing fins as in Specification 581,776, [Group XXXV], the gyroscope outputs control an amplifier which is linear over a predetermined range, but the output of which is limited beyond this range, reaction back on to the gyroscopes due to this limiting being prevented. The movement of a shaft 4, assumed to be synchronously linked or directly coupled with the gyroscopes, controls a pilot hydraulic valve 1, controlling a larger valve 2 moving between fixed stops 13, 13, and having a balanced mechanical follow-up linkage 6 back to the pilot valve. Thus the movement of the valve 2 is limited, but the shaft 4 is free to move beyond these limits. Valve 2 controls the main motor 10 via a further amplifying pilot valve 9.
