Abstract

890,264. Stabilised antenna systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Jan. 29, 1960 [Feb. 2, 1959], No. 3277/60. Class 113. [Also in Groups XX and XL(c)] A stabilised antenna system which makes use of the gyroscopic properties of a rotating antenna comprises the antenna 2 (see Group XL(c)) which is supported in the gimbal 1 which is in turn supported by means 5 fixed to the craft. The axle 3 is fixed to the antenna and is coupled to the gimbal by a rotation sensor 6 at one end and by a torquer 7 at the other. The axle 4 is fixed to the gimbal and joined to the means 5 at one end by a sensor 8 and at the other end by a torquer 9 a stabilized reference platform 11 which is supported on the craft in a manner similar to the antenna 2 is also provided with sensors 12, 13 and torquers 25, 26 which provide signals representative of the pitch and roll motions of the craft. A signal from the sensor 6 is compared with a signal from the sensor 12 by the circuit 14 which produces a difference signal which is fed to the servo amplifier 15 to control the torquer 9 and rotate the axle 4 causing the antenna 2 to precess, due to its gyroscopic properties, about the axle 3 until a null occurs in the output of the circuit 14. The same principle of operation applies to movement about the other axis so that the position of the antenna follows that of the platform 11 at all times. In a second embodiment the antenna is made pendulus and the reference platform omitted from the system. A signal from the sensor on one axis is fed to a servo amplifier to control a torquer on the other axis. In a third embodiment the antenna is made pendulus and the sensors, torquers, amplifiers and references are omitted.
