Abstract

581,776. Automatic control systemsfor ships. BELL, J., BOLSHAW, S., and WRIGHT, C. S. March 18, 1943, No. 4384. [Class 38 (iv)] Steering ; altitude. Ship stabilising means for pitch roll or yaw is operated by a power followup motor controlled by the receiver of a system for the transmission of angular data to which is transmitted an impulse representing the sum of data proportional to the angular velocity and angular displacement of the ship about the appropriate axis at least one of which is adjustable in amount and sense. Control devices of suitable character such as gyroscopes are coupled to means for transmitting the angular data secured. As shown a gyroscope 1 is arranged to be responsive to angular velocity of roll, for example, and a gyroscope 6 to be responsive to displacement in roll. Control impulses in opposite senses and of different values for the same displacement are derived from the gyroscope 6 by connections 12, 13 to elements of transmitters 10, 11 which also receive velocity impulses from the gyroscope 1 and the combined impulses are transmitted to the contacts of a switch 17 which has an off position and positions selecting either of the combinations of impulses for transmission to receivers controlling the roll stabilizer motors 16p, 16s. Preferably a further switch 18 provides selection whereby the impulses may be employed for stabilization or maintenance of roll. To produce rolling in a calm a third position of the switch 18 connects to a switch 19 which is operable by hand to apply power to the stabilizers in a manner to establish rolling. Fig. 2 shows a system whereby control devices responsive to roll and to pitch and comprising the features set forth may be combined to control jointly stabilizing means operative in respect of pitching and rolling. Electrical or mechanical-differentials 20 effect the combination of both types of control impulses derived from roll and pitch systems 23, 24 and transmit them with appropriate reversal, where required, to the stabilizers 15.
