[Class 38 (iv)] In an automatic control system for aircraft in which deviations from an existing course are counteracted by a rate-of-turn gyro, the course is changed by selecting an angle of bank and controlling the rudder by a signal which is the difference between signals proportional respectively to the rate of turn and to the tangent of the angle of bank. The signal becomes zero when the craft is turning at the correct rate at the cruising speed. At other speeds, side-slip takes place and a device responsive to such slip corrects the turning rate. Alternatively, the signal proportional to the tangent of the angle of bank may be adjustable in accordance with the actual airspeed. Means are provided also for automatically correcting roll and pitch, for selecting a desired normal pitch angle and for controlling the course by a compass jointly with the rate-of-turn gyro. The gyro may be replaced by the rate-of-turn devices described in Specification 611,005, [Group XX]. Specifications 576,248, 576,249 and 576,351 also are referred to.
