Abstract

777,730. Automatic steering control systems. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. Aug. 8, 1955 [Aug. 13, 1954], No. 23654/54. Class 38 (4). The difference between a signal constituting the reference attitude of an aircraft automatic pilot and a signal representing actual attitude is operated on by a specified mathematical differential operator and serves to operate a warning device or disable the automatic pilot when the difference exceeds a predetermined value. The invention is applied to an aircraft automatic pilot in which deviation in rate of pitch, as detected by a gyro 1, from a desired value, set by a controller 3, results in a direct current difference signal being applied to an amplifier 6, the output of which controls a servomotor 7 adjusting elevators (not shown) to maintain the desired rate of pitch. To prevent an undesirable condition of loading of the elevators, direct current signals dependent on the set rate of pitch, from controller 3, and the actual pitch angle, as detected by a separate gyro 12, are supplied to a resistance-capacity network 10, 12 so that a signal representing the difference between the actual and desired rates of pitch operated on by the specified differential operator serves, through a potentiometer 15 automatically adjusted in accordance with airspeed, to operate a warning device 17 or declutch servomotor 7 from the elevators when the difference exceeds a predetermined value.
