548,195. Automatic control systems for aircraft. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. March 13, 1940, No. 1006/41. Convention date March 18, 1939. Divided out of 548,190. [Class 38 (iv)] Altitude ; steering. An automatic pilot comprises means responsive to side slip, such as a pendulum, adapted to control the rate of turning affected by continuous change of setting of a course controller acting on the rudder thereby to eliminate the slip, e.g., during a banked turn. A turn may be initiated by adjustment of a knob 48 whereby the base of a gyro-vertical is tilted about the longitudinal axis of an aircraft to cause an electromagnetic pick-off 191 to adjust the ailerons to bank the craft. A pendulum 52 operates upon reversed fields of a motor 56 to adjust a potentiometer contact 58 whereby a motor 60 adjusting the setting of a course directing gyroscope is driven in the direction and at the speed required to maintain the rate of change of course necessary to eliminate any slip.
