Abstract

1379026 Automatic control of aircraft BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 2 Aug 1972 [4 Aug 1971] 36670/71 Heading G3R In a system in which control members of an aircraft are operated in response to measured deviations from a desired flight condition, the measured values are also supplied to a computer which, taking into account the aerodynamic and dynamic characteristics of the aircraft, determines the deviations which are due only to turbulance and applies appropriate correcting factors to the control signals. The invention is shown applied to the pitch axis of an aircraft, but it may also be applied to the yaw and roll axis. Sensors 14-17 detect the incremental values of forward speed, vertical speed, pitch rate and pitch attitude. They are connected to a known autopilot 8 on lines 18a-20a and also to "gust computer" 23, which also receives signals corresponding to the forces and movements on the aircraft, on lines 9a, 10a. The computer solves equations which are given in the specification to determine the deviations due to gusts alone. Its output, in the form of forward Ug and vertical Wg speeds due to gusts is fed to a second computer 26 which calculates the necessary corrections which are combined with the output of the autopilot 8 and applied to the control system 2. The control surfaces include direct lift devices such as "high flaps', and spoilers.
