Abstract
29,782. Kelvin, Bottomley, & Baird, and Field, M. S. Dec. 24. Mariners' compasses.-A suspension for mariners' compasses comprises a grummet ring supported at diametrically-opposed points by chains 2 attached to lugs 3 on the binnacle ring 4. Pairs of springs 5, symmetrically disposed relatively to the chains 2, are also attached to the grummet ring and the binnacle ring. Fitted at diametricallyopposed points on the grummet ring, preferably displaced 90 degrees from the points of attachment of the chains, are two rigid or slightly yielding struts 8. Secured to the struts is an undeformable ring 9. Supported on knife-edge bearings 10 by the ring 9 is a second ring 11, to which in turn is pivoted the compass bowl 13. In modifications, the chains are attached symmetrically with reference to the knife-edge bearings 10. and may be secured to the rigid ring 9 instead of the grummet ring 1. The level of the compass bowl is preferably lower than the level of the binnacle ring.
